MANILA, Philippines – The manager of Russian brawler Ruslan Provodnikov guarantees the former world champion will be back better than ever after suffering a controversial loss at the hands of Chris Algieri.
Provodnikov had a breakout year in 2013 and became one of the sport's most exciting fighters. He won his first world title by beating Mike Alvarado to claim the WBO light-welterweight belt.
But he failed in his first title defense, losing a split decision to Algieri despite dropping the American twice in the opening round.
“I just think some fighters are more relieved now, thinking that they won’t have to fight Ruslan because he has just lost,” manager Vadim Kornilov said to Boxing Scene when asked how his fighter’s loss will affect his future prospects.
“But he will be back better and stronger,” Kornilov guaranteed.
It is not sure yet if Provodnikov and Algieri will fight each other in a rematch, but Kornilov is sure of the outcome if that fight ever materializes.
“Definitely, Ruslan will knock Algieri out in the rematch,” he said.
Kornilov also assured that should Provodnikov fight Algieri again, the Russian boxer will take the bout as seriously as he did his matches against Tim Bradley and Alvarado.
