MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) The Philippine national men's basketball team will play against a team of NBA stars in what businessman Manny V. Pangilinan boasts will be the "biggest basketball charity event ever."
Pangilinan announced on Wednesday that he is bringing NBA All-Stars Blake Griffin, Damian Lillard, DeMar DeRozan and Paul Pierce to the Philippines to participate in an event tabbed "Gilas' Last Home Stand."
For a brief period, the event’s website also showed the San Antonio Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard, the 2014 Finals MVP, will also be included in the line-up, but his name has since been removed from the list of All-Stars.
The Gilas Pilipinas players who are playing in the event are: Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro, Ranidel de Ocampo, Gabe Norwood, and Marc Pingris.
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes later tweeted that the NBA players will be accompanied by Coach John Lucas, and that they will arrive in Manila on July 22 to 23.
The event is geared towards helping Gilas Pilipinas prepare for the FIBA World Cup, according to Reyes.
The event will be held at the Araneta Coliseum. Tickets are now available at the Araneta Coliseum Ticket Booth and Ticketnet outlets.
Reyes also says the event will raise funds for the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF).
