MANILA - Billiards Congress of America Hall of Fame inductee Efren “Bata” Reyes said he believes that Philippine billiards is in good hands with the country’s current crop of pool players.
“Dati ko naman silang tinatalo,” said Reyes on “Mornings @ ANC.” He was referring to rising RP pool champions Dennis Orcollo, Ronnie Alcano and Alex Pagulayan.
“Siyempre aangat pa rin si Orcollo,” he noted of the reigning Predator International 10-Ball champion.
“Parang ayaw na niyang sumablay kahit gusto niya, ayaw,” Reyes added with a chuckle.
“The Magician” also commented on the first Women’s World 10-Ball champion Rubilen Amit.
“Matagal na dapat ‘yan. Player na lalaki, tinatalo niya. Tinalo [niya] si Ronnie Alcano,” he said with pride.
Reyes is set to go against 2006 World Pool champion Alcano on Thursday’s rotation match dubbed “Challenge of the Legend: The Maestro vs the Volcano.”
The event headlined by Reyes and Alcano will take place at the Annex of SM North EDSA in Quezon City.
It will be presented by Sen. Manny Villar’s Villards: Tulong sa Pagsulong ng Philippine Sports in cooperation with the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP). The event is sponsored by Camella Communities.
Reyes mentioned that the billiards game of rotation is not shown on television often. “Matagal sa TV… mas maraming bola,” he explained.
But the race-to-9 rotation match featuring “The Magician” and “The Volcano” will get airtime on ABS-CBN’s Studio 23. The pool event will be broadcast live from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Aside from the Reyes-Alcano match, several pool champs are slated to participate in the JBETpoker.net Scotch Doubles All-Star Challenge.
The Scotch doubles challenge will feature Orcollo and Gandy Valle (Bugsy Promotions), Lee Van Corteza and Warren Kiamco (Negros Billiards Stable), Ramil Gallego and Antonio Lining (BMPAP), and Pagulayan and Rodolfo Luat (Puyat Sports).
