MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum said Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. is currently looking very impressive inside the ring ahead of his fight with South African champion Jeffrey Mathebula.
Arum, who visited Donaire’s training grounds in Los Angeles, said the Filipino-American is doing a tremendous job in preparing for the July 7 WBO-IBF super bantamweight unification title clash.
“[He’s] not good, but sensational, sensational,” the veteran ring promoter told Philboxing’s Ronnie Nathanielsz.
Arum credited Team Donaire and nutritional expert Victor Conte for doing a good job in improving Doanire’s conditioning.
Trainer Robert Garcia said Donaire is bulking up to offset the height advantage of the 5’10” Mathebula.
“[Donaire] is very strong and gained a lot of muscle,” said the boxing coach. “All the work he is doing with Olympic track coach Remy Korchemny and James Bassel is putting on a lot of muscle.”
The Donaire-Mathebula fight card will be aired by ABS-CBN Channel 2 on July 8, Sunday starting at 10 a.m.
