MANILA, Philippines – For Chris Ross, making the PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals is a blessing. But being one of the top contenders for the conference's Best Player award is a surprise.
Ross and teammate Alex Cabagnot are tied for first place in the statistical points at the end of Commissioner's Cup semifinals, with another teammate – June Mar Fajardo – a very close third in the race.
"I had no clue," Ross said of his standing in the BPC race. "I know at the end of eliminations, I was being tagged a lot (on social media), saying I was No. 8. To jump to No. 1, it's cool."
Yet Ross was also the first to say that the individual award is the least of his concerns right now. After all, their best-of-seven Finals series against TNT Ka Tropa is just around the corner, and that offers a much bigger trophy.
"I never play for stats, and I never play for individual awards," said Ross, who was the Finals MVP in San Miguel's last two Philippine Cup title runs. "I always play for the team."
"I'm a team guy, first and foremost. Team always comes first, and winning games , and eventually, winning a championship is No. 1 on my list," he stressed.
