MANILA, Philippines – Incoming UAAP Commissioner Andy Jao will tap the services of referees from the Basketball Referees Association for Schools, Colleges and Universities (BRASCU) to officiate the games of the Season 77 basketball tournaments.
Jao explained on "The Score" Wednesday night that he worked well with the BRASCU referees back when he first served as UAAP Commissioner in the 2011 season.
"Every commissioner has his own choice of who he wants to use, and the people that I’m going to bring in this year were the people who worked with me in 2011," said Jao. "I really felt I was very comfortable."
"I had a couple of complaints but never real controversies, so I’m very comfortable with these people. I trust them, and they trust the authority that I place over them, and that's the most important thing, I think, for anybody that's working as the head of a certain organization," he added.
Jao acknowledged that in 2011, some of the BRASCU referees "were still new in the business, in the sense of how high profile the UAAP is and how passionate the people are there."
But those referees have improved now, he said.
"Now, a lot of them have matured and improved their calling… I feel that I can do a good job with them, and that’s the most important thing," said Jao.
Officiating became a contentious issue in the Season 76 men’s basketball tournament, with then-commissioner Chito Loyzaga meting out suspensions several times to different game officials.
