MANILA, Philippines – Respected boxing trainer Robert Garcia guaranteed that world super bantamweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire will be ready for his July 7 title defense against South Africa’s Jeffrey Mathebula.
“Donaire looks very strong, and very, very quick, so he’s ready,” Garcia told Ronnie Nathanielsz of Boxing Scene.
Garcia added that Donaire still has a “few pounds to lose,” but is confident the “Filipino Flash” will be ready in time for the bout.
“We will leave that to the last week or so, about 4-5 pounds,” he added.
Donaire will be making the first defense of his World Boxing Organization super bantamweight title against Mathebula, who is four inches taller than Donaire at 5-foot-10.
To prepare Donaire for the height disadvantage, Garcia brought sparring partners who were 5-foot-11.
Garcia said Donaire is already “very strong,” as the boxer has gained a lot of muscle in his frame.
“He is not really doing weights, but all the work that he is doing with Olympic track coach Remi (Korchemny) and (James) Bassel is putting on a lot of muscle,” he added.
Donaire will be fighting at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.
