MANILA, Philippines – University of Santo Tomas (UST) swingman Kevin Ferrer is focused on the Growling Tigers' campaign in the upcoming UAAP season and is not yet considering joining the PBA Rookie Draft.
Ferrer suited up for Blackwater Sports in the PBA D-League, but believes he is not quite ready yet for the PBA.
"'Yung PBA, darating naman 'yan," he said. "Hindi naman ako nagma-madali. Kailangan ko pa magpa-hinog."
Moreover, Ferrer noted that there’s nothing quite like playing in the UAAP.
"Iba kasi 'yung UAAP eh," he said. "Iba 'yung spirit ng school, at saka 'yung suporta."
Ferrer is entering his fourth playing year in the UAAP, and will now be counted on as one of the leaders of a UST squad that will sorely miss the services of Jeric Teng, who is now playing for Rain or Shine in the PBA.
"Since wala na naman si Jeric Teng, kailangan namin 'yung leader ulit. So isa na rin ako sa mga nag-step up. Isa na rin ako sa pinaka-leader, gina-guide ko 'yung mga bago," he said.
This is where his experiences in the D-League will come in handy, he added.
"'Yung na-experience ko sa D-League, nasha-share ko sa kanila," said Ferrer.
The Growling Tigers are hoping to finally win the UAAP crown this year after falling short in each of the past two seasons.
"Lalaban pa rin 'yung team namin," said Ferrer. "Pipilitin namin pumunta ulit ng Final Four muna, and then Finals, and then ayun, championship."
