MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Marvin Sonsona has pulled out of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights after suffering a back injury while training.
Sonsona, the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion, has a strain in his left lumbar region and will have to be sidelined from action for at least six weeks.
Sonsona was supposed to make his US debut against Puerto Rican Olympian Orlando Cruz in the main event of ESPN2's Friday Night Fights on July 6.
"We're very disappointed," said Sonsona’s adviser Sampson Lewkowicz in Ring TV.
"We're thinking about whether he will either stay in the States or [return to] the Philippines, but we haven't made a decision yet."
Sonsona won the WBO super flyweight belt by beating José López in 2009.
He was, however, forced to vacate the crown after not being able to make the weight limit for his first title defense.
