MANILA, Philippines –Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, admits that he has not been happy with the pound-for-pound king’s recent performances in the ring.
According to BoxingScene.com, Roach is lamenting Pacquiao’s lack of killer instinct in his recent bouts, especially against Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley. He said that Pacquiao felt too much compassion for his opponents.
Both of Pacquiao’s bouts against Margarito and Mosley ended in unanimous decision victories.
But the four-time Trainer of the Year wants a different result in Pacquiao’s next boxing match: he is planning to urge "Pacman" to knock out his opponent, Juan Manuel Marquez.
"I can't wait for this fight, for Manny to finally shut them up and show them that they were not robbed the first two times," Roach said.
The November 12 bout will be the third meeting between Pacquiao and Marquez, and both of their previous matches were controversial.
Their first meeting ended in a draw despite Pacquiao knocking Marquez down three times in the first round. In the rematch, Pacquiao won a close split decision.
Now, Roach wants Pacquiao to decisively beat Marquez.
"I'm going to urge Manny to put the pressure on this guy and get him out of there so there is no doubt."
But Roach is also not underestimating Marquez, who is the last fighter to have come close to beating Pacquiao since Erik Morales in 2005.
"He does know how to fight Manny Pacquiao. He's a very smart fighter," Roach said of Marquez.
Roach admitted that he has sometimes wondered if Marquez "has our number."
"But Manny has come a long way since the last fight. He's a more complete fighter."
He added that he knows Marquez will be ready for battle, but, "This time Manny will be way too strong for him."
