MANILA, Philippines – Air21 center Asi Taulava on Wednesday suffered a huge cut above his left eye after getting accidentally elbowed by GlobalPort center Dior Lowhorn in the second quarter of their PBA Governors Cup game.
Taulava refused to let the gash force him out of the contest, however, as he had the cut taped up and returned to the game in the second half.
He came up big in the crucial moments of the game, coming up with key rebounds as well as short stab with 23.5 seconds left to help power Air21 to a 106-102 victory.
Taulava finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, and the Air21 Express kept their hopes of nailing a top four berth alive with their 5-3 record.
“We can’t afford to lose this game. After the game, then we can go to the hospital,” Taulava said, as quoted by PBA.ph.
Air21 coach Franz Pumaren would later estimate that Taulava will likely need some seven to 10 stitches for his cut.
