MANILA, Philippines – Respected boxing trainer Naazim Richardson wonders why Filipino ring icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao continues to fight, when he has already accomplished so much in the sport.
Pacquiao will fight on November 24 in Macau against Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, a former world champion known for his knockout power.
Richardson, the trainer of Bernard Hopkins and “Sugar” Shane Mosley, told Boxing Scene that it a highly dangerous fight for both men.
“Both of those guys have had rough goings, and we don’t know what’s left. I’ve known Brandon since he was in the amateurs… and he fights like somebody knocked his drink off the table and said they weren’t paying for it,” Richardson said.
“Brandon just fights. No jabs allowed. He’s a rough customer,” he added. “Pacquiao is special, but Pacquiao just went through a real traumatizing loss.”
Richardson is referring to Pacquiao’s knockout defeat at the hands of rival Juan Manuel Marquez last December, which saw the Filipino idol lying face down on the canvas for a couple of minutes before being revived.
The trainer is now wondering why Pacquiao is even still fighting.
“My thing is, Pacquiao’s coming back to do what? Is he gonna do something he hasn’t done already?” Richardson said. “What, is he gonna come back and win another championship?”
“Listen. These guys have done everything. I used to tell Bernard (Hopkins) – leave this sport before you’ve done everything, because you’ve done everything in this sport except lose badly,” he added.
“And Pacquiao has done everything that you can do. There’s not a thing in boxing that Pacquiao hasn’t done.”
Richardson then asked if Pacquiao has ever been disqualified from a boxing match.
When informed that he hasn’t, Richardson replied: “There you go. Is he gonna stick around for that?”
