MANILA – The fourth encounter between great rivals Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico and Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao of the Philippines should be considered as one of the greatest fights in history, according to retired HBO commentator Larry Merchant.
The bout, which was held last December at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, saw Marquez finally earning the victory he craved when he knocked out Pacquiao with just a second to go in the sixth round.
“That fight should be on every list of great fights,” Merchant said in an interview with Dog House Boxing.
“It was as good as it gets, because it wasn’t as if nothing was happening, and then there was a knockout,” he explained.
“Everything was happening, then there was a knockout.
“It’s one of those fights that will live on forever.”
The bout was named “Fight of the Year” for 2012 by both The Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America.
