MANILA, Philippines – The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters will try to rack up a fourth straight victory when they face off against the Meralco Bolts in the PBA Governors Cup Tuesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
A win against Meralco will boost Rain or Shine’s chances of making it to the Top Four of the league standings and claiming a twice-to-beat advantage.
But head coach Yeng Guiao said the Bolts should not be taken lightly despite their subpar record.
“Meralco is playing with their backs against the wall,” Guiao told PBA.ph. “That’s probably the most dangerous opponent you can have.”
The Bolts have a 2-5 record so far in the tournament, but are coming off a 90-74 upset of the San Miguel Beermen last Saturday that should boost their confidence.
“We dodged a bullet against the mighty San Miguel Beermen,” Meralco coach Ryan Gregorio said. “We played with focus and determination, knowing the game’s strong implications on our fate.”
Their victory against SMB allowed the Bolts to keep their slim semi-final hopes alive, but Gregorio said they again face an “acid test” against a Rain or Shine team that is humming on offense.
“They averaged over 120 points against quality teams. Their rhythm must be destroyed. They are playing at a very high level on both ends of the floor,” said Gregorio.
Rain or Shine started the conference with back-to-back defeats but has been on a roll since, winning three straight games including a historic 51-point demolition of Alaska last week.
“I hope this surge is not too late in our goal to make it to the top four,” Guiao said of his team’s recent winning streak.
Game time is at 5:15 p.m
