MANILA – After their impressive showing in the recent AFC Challenge Cup, the Philippine Azkals soared in the latest FIFA men’s ranking.
From 140th place, the Filipino booters rose 11 spots to 129, ahead of fellow Challenge Cup competitor Afghanistan.
The current rank is two places shy of the Azkals' best placing of 127.
The Philippines drew with Afghanistan then beat Laos and Turkenistan to finish at the top of their group in the Challenge Cup.
They also beat host team Maldives in the semis before finishing second behind Palestine in the Asian Cup qualifier.
The Philippine team, now mentored by German-American Thomas Dooley, is now setting up plans to defend the Philippine Peace Cup title. They will also compete in next year’s Suzuki Cup.
