MANILA, Philippines – Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos of Brazil is open to fighting reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones.
In an interview with ESPN, Dos Santos emphasized that he does not care who fights next, but will be willing to fight Jones, the current king of the light heavyweight division.
“I really like him, but if he comes up to the heavyweight division, and he gets the chance to fight for the title, we’re gonna fight. I will give my best to beat him,” Dos Santos said.
Dos Santos recently defended his title at UFC 146 against former titleholder Frank Mir in Las Vegas, putting on a boxing clinic en route to a second-round technical knockout victory.
Jones, meanwhile, has had one of the most dominant runs in UFC history, successfully defending his title three consecutive times, with all defenses coming against former light heavyweight champions.
Dos Santos acknowledged that Jones will be a tough match-up for most of the heavyweights in the UFC.
“Jon Jones is really good. He’s really good. It’s different, for sure. If he comes up to the heavyweight division, it’s gonna be tough for us, for sure,” he said.
Even so, Dos Santos insists he is not concerned if Jones ever moves up to challenge him for the heavyweight belt.
“It doesn’t matter who my opponent is. If it’s gonna be him, I don’t care,” said the Brazilian.
Jones is set to make the fourth defense of his light heavyweigh title against veteran fighter Dan Henderson later this year. Dos Santos, meanwhile, may be headed for a rematch against former champion Cain Velasquez.
