After a painful loss to World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez, former world champion Gerry Peñalosa is looking to fight one more time before eventually hanging his gloves.
“Gusto kong kalabanin ang mananalo sa [Fernando] Montiel-[Eric] Morel [fight],” Peñalosa said during Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association forum at Shakey’s UN Avenue in Manila.
Montiel and Morel will be slugging it out for the WBO bantamweight title which was stripped from Peñalosa after he failed to defend it within a year’s time.
“Sa akin lang, gusto kong mag-retire na ang last fight ay nanalo ako and at the same time may belt ako. Malaking karangalan sa akin at the same time makakapagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bansa,” said the Filipino.
He said that he will return to 118 pounds and also said he would prefer to fight in the Philippines.
Peñalosa lost his attempt to win the WBO super bantamweight crown after absorbing a technical knock out loss to Lopez on April 25.
Coach Freddie Roach decided to stop the fight before the 10th round began after seeing his ward being outpunched by the much younger Puerto Rican sensation.
Peñalosa said he has only watched a video of his fight against Lopez last Sunday. He said he wanted to evaluate if he indeed receive a terrible beating.
“Tinignan ko ang laban ko na kung talagang nakasira lang sa akin, tiningnan ko kung at least walang damage sa katawan ko. Noong nakita ko, naconfirm ko ‘okay, one last fight’,” he said.
The veteran boxer, who will be turning 37 this coming August, also thanked those who called for his retirement from the sport as they expressed concern that he might only get hurt if he continues fighting.
Among those who discouraged him from fighting again is his kompadre and Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.
“’Yong kumpare kong si Manny Pacquiao concerned po sa akin, ‘yong mga Filipino fans concerned na baka kung ano ang mangyari. Aminin natin na may edad na po tayo. Salamat po sa inyo,” said Peñalosa.
“Pero hinihingi ko po, one last fight,” he added.
When asked if he will change his mind should he win over the winner of the Montiel-Morel fight, Peñalosa replied: "Hindi na siguro kasi matagal na akong nalayo sa pamilya ko na iniwan ko ng matagal-tagal dahil sa boxing. Although masakit dahil love ko ang sport na ito, tatanggapin ko [ang pagreretiro]."
