MANILA, Philippines –The Meralco Bolts finally registered a victory in the PBA Governors Cup after upsetting the Alaska Aces, 88-87, Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Import Mario West top-scored for Meralco with 21 points, while Cliff Hodge added 20 markers and point guard Mike Cortez played through pain to finish with 19 points.
Two free throws by Cortez put Meralco on top by four points, 88-84, with just 14.2 seconds left in the game. But Alaska import Bill Walker drilled a triple with a little over 10 seconds left to cut the lead to just one point.
A Meralco turnover on the inbounds pass gave the Aces a chance to steal the game, but Alaska wasted the opportunity when Walker misfired on a triple off a DonDon Hontiveros pass in the closing seconds.
Meralco now has a 1-4 record in the Governors Cup after losing their first four assignments of the conference.
Alaska, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3.
Walker finished with a game-high 26 points for the Aces, while Calvin Abueva added 17 points.
