Talk 'N Text drops SMB
MANILA – Rain or Shine had to grind it out in the final stretch before overcoming a tough Barako Bull, 96-93, in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday.
In the other game, Talk ‘N Text turned back San Miguel Beer, 103-97, for a share of second place in the team standings.
The Elasto Painters unleashed a searing 11-3 run in the last five minutes to fend off the Energy Cola, who put up a gritty stand until the final buzzer.
Barako Bull could have forced overtime, but Willie Miller’s looping triple failed to hit the mark.
“Barako Bull has been really tough. …They are 1-4 right now but their record doesn’t really show how good this team is,” Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said in the PBA website after the game.
“They’ve been giving teams a hard time. The last time they played, I think they stretched San Miguel to overtime and they almost did that to us this game.”
The E-Painters were up, 94-90, when Mick Pennisi fired a triple that pulled Barako Bull within 1 point, with 1:04 to go.
The Energy Cola tried to buy time by going after Paul Lee, but the latter passed the ball to an open Jeff Chan who went for a layup that pushed the E-Painters to a 96-93 lead, 13 seconds remaining.
“We just probably had a little more experience at finishing the game as a team and that experience was put to good use. That’s the only difference,” said Guiao. “Konting experience namin sa endgame but otherwise they were there all the way and they gave themselves a really good chance to win.”
Meanwhile, Rodney Carney top-scored for Talk ‘N Text with 28 to steer the Tropang Texters past San Miguel Beer.
San Miguel Beer was threatening to take the lead in the final minutes of the game, but free throws by Ranidel de Ocampo and Jayson Castro fended off the Beermen’s charge.
Noy Baclao later blanked Reggie Williams to preserve the victory for the Tropang Texters.
Jimmy Alapag had 18 points for Talk ‘N Text, while Jayson Castro added 21.
The Beermen fell to their second loss in five games.
