MANILA – San Mig Coffee’s Marc Pingris was spared of suspension despite getting caught punching Meralco’s James Sena during a PBA game last Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum.
However, the versatile forward-center got fined P40,000 for the attack that caused his ejection from the San Mig-Meralco game.
“After thorough consideration of all the circumstances of the case, including the reports of the referee concerned and the technical committee, as well as your own testimony, this office finds that after a hard pick you received from James Ryan Sena, you were seen grabbing his jersey and throwing a punch that landed on his lower backside,” said PBA chief Chito Salud in a statement addressed to Pingris.
The statement was posted on PBA's official website.
“The act was properly classified as a FFP2 (flagrant foul penalty 2) for which you were ejected. This office considers such act as blatantly unnecessary, excessive and unsportsmanlike in nature,” Salud added.
Pingris had reasoned that he got back at Sena after the Meralco forward set a pick that injured his ribcage. The San Mig Coffee player said the injury had yet to fully heal, which is why he got infuriated.
“Wala na sa anggulo ‘yung pick niya eh. Sana kung dumaan yung import sa kanya. Eh di naman,” he said. “Two weeks ko pinagaling ito, tapos eto ulit. Masakit na naman.”
Pingris was also fined P60,000 last year after figuring in a fist fight with GlobalPort’s Kelly Nabong. He served a two-game suspension for the commotion.
