MANILA, Philippines – San Miguel Beer needed overtime to force a 115-112 win over Barako Bull in the PBA Governors' Cup in Binan, Laguna on Wednesday.
Reggie Williams paced the Beermen with 33 points, with 13 of them coming in the payoff and the extra periods. He also hauled down 13 rebounds help San Miguel post its third win in 4 starts.
Junmar Fajardo churned out 26 points while Chris Ross and Arwind Santos each tallied 10.
“I am very happy to get the win,” said SMB consultant Todd Purves in the league’s official website.
“Every game in the PBA is tough, and I’m proud of the guys tonight for getting in there and hanging in tough. It feels good to get a couple of wins. Barako (Bull) is well-coached and they also grind it out tonight,” he added.
The Beermen were holding on to a 100-94 lead when the Energy Cola unfastened a 9-3 run, barely 3 minutes remaining before regulation.
The 9-point effort tied the game, 103-all. Barako Bull had the chance to steal the game, but Jeric Fortuna’s potential game-winner missed its mark and allowed the game to move into overtime.
It was neck-and-neck during the extra period until Fajardo completed a 3-point play that put San Miguel ahead, 115-111, 53 seconds remaining. Jason Deutchman split his charities to make it a 3-point game, 115-112.
Fortuna again got the chance to send the game into another overtime, but missed his triple.
Eric Wise had 33 points for the Energy Cola, while Mick Pennisi poured in 20 with 6 triples. Barako Bull absorbed its third straight loss in 4 games.
