MANILA – Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire is going to make his mark in the featherweight division through his skills and punching power, according to HBO’s unofficial scorer Harold Lederman.
Lederman, a renowned boxing judge and analyst, has been with HBO World Championship Boxing since 1986.
He has seen Donaire’s performances, including the boxer’s decision loss to technical fighter Guillermo Rigondeaux.
Lederman believes the Filipino Flash is capable of coming back from that loss because of his outstanding skills.
“Nonito Donaire was considered as the second best fighter in the world and he took on Guillermo Rigondeaux and he was handed a boxing lesson. I mean he was totally outboxed in the fight,” said Lederman in his HBO program “Hey Harold!”
Lederman said Donaire’s title bout against South African champion Simpiwe Vetyeka will be the perfect stage for the Filipino boxer’s comeback.
Donaire, who will be challenging Vetyeka on May 31 at the Cotai arena in Macau, is looking for his fourth world title in as many weight classes.
“He's going to come back,” said Lederman. “I'm sure he's gonna be featherweight champion at 126 pounds because Nonito is that good.”
“He's a terrific fighter, he's gonna come back big and I think he will.”
