MANILA, Philippines – New import Rodney Carney will play his first game for Talk N Text tonight when the Tropang Texters take on the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA Governors Cup at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan, Laguna.
With original import, Othyus Jeffers, unable to get clearance from the NBA, the Texters paraded an all-Filipino line-up against Alaska in their game last week and lost, 91-103.
"Because the NBA won’t release his (Jeffers') rights until June 30, we were faced to make an import change," Talk N Text coach Norman Black confirmed to PBA.ph.
"Losing Othyus is a big loss because of his talent and good attitude. Nonetheless, we will go out and do our best to win the game versus Rain or Shine," he said.
Carney was the 16th overall pick in the 2006 NBA Rookie Draft by Chicago and played for Philadelphia, Minnesota, Golden State and Memphis in his NBA career.
Black says they are counting on Carney’s ability to slash to the basket, as well as his defense, to help them in their Governors Cup campaign.
"We are hoping he can step in and help the team right away, despite coming in on short notice," he said.
It will be a tough debut for Carney, as he will immediately be matched up against Rain or Shine’s Arizona Reid.
