No Pingris, no problem for San Mig
MANILA, Philippines – Defending champion San Mig Coffee returned to its winning ways by crushing Meralco, 108-90 in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday.
Despite losing Marc Pingris in the second quarter due to a flagrant foul, the Coffee Mixers handled the Bolts well and bounced back from their 90-92 loss to sister team San Miguel Beermen last Sunday.
“It was a great bounce-back ability from the team,” said San Mig Coffee tactician Tim Cone in the PBA website.
“Coming back from that San Miguel loss, that was a painful loss. I take it more to me than the players because I screwed that one up, but they bounced back very well from it and one key to a very good team is their bounce-back ability.”
Marqus Blakely led the Mixers with 16 points and 18 rebounds, while Mark Barroca and James Yap added 15 and 13, respectively. PJ Simon topscored for San Mig Coffee with 22 points.
The Mixers did well in containing Meralco’s Mario West even after the ejection of Pingris, who was caught throwing a punch at James Sena in the second quarter.
Cone admitted that they struggled to find their rhythm early in the game when the Mixers were already showing signs of tiredness.
“I always tell the players that the first sign of fatigue and tiredness is being pikon,” he said. “But if we just focus strictly on the basketball game and don’t get caught with our own little battles, then we’re a very good team.”
“At this point, we got a lot of maturity, and that kind of stuff should just roll of us because we are focused on just winning. That’s what we want to be. We just want to think about winning and take the win and none of the other stuff,” Cone added.
West still managed to score 31 points. But Cliff Hodge was the only other Bolt that delivered a double-digit output with 21 points. Anjo Caram had 8 points while John Wilson added 7.
The loss buried Meralco at the bottom of the standings with four straight defeats. San Mig Coffee, on the other hand, is tied with the Beermen and the Alaska Aces with 2-1 each.
