Paragua, Gutierrez shine in US chess tourneys

MANILA – Two young Filipino chessers were recently named as most outstanding players in separate tournaments in the United States.

Gem Hanna Paragua, 16, and Dennis Gutierrez III, 10, were winners in chess tournaments in Philadelphia and New York, respectively.

Paragua, the younger sister of Grand Master Mark Paragua, had a record of six wins and one raw in seven outings to claim a total of 6.5 points.

She also teamed up with elder brother Jan Vincent to rule the mixed doubles event with a total of 11.5 points.

The 10-year-old Gutierrez, meanwhile, dominated the 20th New York State Open Blitz Chess championship last May 18 to 20.

Gutierrez tallied seven wins in eight outings in the tournament while another Filipino entry, Ryan Calacday, finished eighth overall with 3.5 points. -- By Marlon Bernardino.
