Compton makes Alaska coaching debut against TNT
MANILA, Philippines – New Alaska head coach Alex Compton will get his baptism of fire Monday night when he steers the Aces against the Talk N Text Tropang Texters in his coaching debut in the PBA Governors Cup.
Alaska announced on Sunday that Compton will be replacing Luigi Trillo as the head coach of the Aces, effective immediately.
"It has been an honor working with and learning from coach Luigi Trillo, and I consider him a good friend," Compton said in a statement.
"While I will miss working with him, I am both excited and challenged by the opportunity to try and replicate the success the Alaska franchise has had over the past 28 years," he added.
Compton takes over an Alaska squad that is currently 1-1 in the Governors Cup, with its most recent game a 91-95 setback against unheralded GlobalPort last Friday.
The Aces face a TNT team that is also undergoing changes, as it is unsure if import Othyus Jeffers can play for the Texters tonight.
PBA.ph reported that Jeffers is set to return to the United States "to fix documents regarding his previous contacts in the NBA." The team is uncertain if his replacement, Desmon Farmer, can fix his papers in time for tonight’s game.
Talk N Text has a 1-0 record in the conference after beating Meralco, 105-99, in their first game last week.
Game time is at 8:00 p.m. at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
