MANILA – Luigi Trillo has stepped down as head coach of the Alaska Aces and will be replaced by Alex Compton, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) team announced on Sunday.
Trillo led Alaska to the PBA Commissioner's Cup last year, but the Aces have since failed to make it to the semi-finals in the past three conferences.
"We are appreciative of Luigi’s efforts during his tenure as head coach, and piloting the Aces to our 14th PBA title," Alaska owner Wilfred Uytengsu said in a statement.
"But it has been a challenging ride the past three conferences," he acknowledged.
Trillo said he was thankful to the Alaska organization “for the last 16 years of employment.”
"I am leaving the team in a good place. I'll always have fond memories, especially the championship we won last year as a team. I'm going to take some time off to spend with my family," he said.
Compton, who joined the Aces as an assistant last year, will take over a team that currently has a 1-1 record in the season-ending Governors Cup.
"It has been an honor working with and learning from Coach Luigi Trillo, and I consider him a good friend," Compton said.
"While I will miss working with him, I am both excited and challenged by the opportunity to try and replicate the success the Alaska franchise has had over the past 28 years," he added.
Compton will make his head coaching debut on Monday, when the Aces take on the Talk N Text Tropang Texters.
