MANILA – Alaska’s prized rookie Calvin Abueva won’t be able to join Gilas Pilipinas’ training in Lithuania due to a knee injury that has been bothering him for sometime.
Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes confirmed that he was already informed by the Alaska management that the former San Sebastian standout won’t be available for the Lithuania trip.
“Just got word fr Alaska mgt that Calvin can't join Gilas,” Reyes said through Twitter.
The Alaska management said Abueva can no longer forego surgery as the player wants to be fully healthy before the PBA Governors’ Cup.
“We follow what the doctor says. If the doctor says Calvin needs to go through treatment now, we do that. We don’t compromise the health of our players just for one championship, especially Calvin who’s just a rookie. We’ll not risk his longevity,” said Alaska owener Alfred Uytengsu in The Philippine Star.
Abueva will be joining fellow injured Alaska players Sonny Thoss and Gabby Espinas to Beijing, China where they will undergo acupuncture therapy.
Reyes, meanwhile, said that of the players he invited to their training sessions, only Arwind Santos and Denok Miranda were able to join.
“Of d players we've invited to join practice, only Arwind & Denok showed up so far.”
Among the other players who got invited were Rain or Shine’s Beau Belga and Paul Lee and Air21’s KG Canaleta.
Only 13 players will be able to fly to Lithuania on June 2.
They are: Marcus Douthit, Junmar Fajardo, Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, Ranidel de Ocampo, Gary David, Jeff Chan, Larry Fonacier, Jimmy Alapag, LA Tenorio, Jayson Castro, Gabe Norwood and Marc Pingris.
The Gilas Pilipinas are preparing for the FIBA-Asia Men’s Basketball Championship that will take place in the country this August.
