MANILA, Philippines – Former mixed martial arts (MMA) champion Frank Mir sought the help of welterweight fighter Dan Hardy to help improve his conditioning for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 146.
Mir will be challenging UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos this weekend which is why he employed Hardy’s expertise.
Included in Mir conditioning routine was a high-altitude regimen, which involved running up to a steep elevation.
Mir wants to be in tip-top shape when he faces the fast-paced, heavy-handed Dos Santos.
“This sucks," said Mir in UFC.com. "But gassing out in a fight, sucks worse."
Hardy, a one-time challenger for the UFC welterweight belt, said his training regimen is tough especially for bigger men.
“I can't imagine like it's trying to get that big old body, moving you know,” he said. “That why these guys are not doing it in their weight class. It's too difficult.”
The UFC 146 main event will take place on Saturday in Mir’s turf in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It will be shown on BALLS Channel on Sunday with replays on Studio 23.
