MANILA, Philippines – The Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings will put big man Greg Slaughter in their active roster for the 2017 PBA Commissioner's Cup playoffs, although he is unlikely to see action at all.
Slaughter has not played since September 2016, when he suffered an ACL injury in his right knee.
On Sunday, following a 107-99 win over San Miguel Beer, Ginebra coach Tim Cone revealed that Slaughter is on his way back.
"We will most likely activate him for the playoffs," he said. "We'll put him on the roster and activate him, but we don't expect him to play."
"But we'll put him there, just in case, to make everybody scared," he joked. "But we really don't expect him to play."
Cone stressed that Slaughter has not yet even practiced with Ginebra. "He's still quite a ways away," he said.
The goal is for Slaughter to return by the Governors' Cup, he added. "Anything before that would be a big surprise," said Cone.
"But we're still going to activate him, put him on the roster before the playoffs start," he added.
Ginebra improved to 6-2 with the win over the Beermen, and they are now assured of a quarterfinals spot. The Gin Kings are also in the running for a Top 2 spot that carries with it a twice-to-beat advantage.
