Boxing legends Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns both believe that Floyd Mayweather’s slick boxing and defensive skills will get the better of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao should the two superstars ever fight.
“You have to go with Mayweather, without question,” said Leonard in a Fight Hype interview, during the red carpet for the boxing legend’s 5th annual Big Fighters, Big Cause charity boxing night.
“Mayweather has not lost. He’s very defensive, he’s a technician,” he added.
“I think Floyd will win,” Hearns said in agreement with Leonard. “Floyd is a very crafty young man, he’s very slick. He’s so slick, so he would cause (Pacquiao) a lot of problems.”
Hearns and Leonard fought twice, with Leonard stopping Hearns in the 14th round in their first fight in 1981. Their 1989 rematch ended in a controversial draw.
Leonard said he still hopes that the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight will eventually take place, even if the negotiations between the two fighters’ camps have repeatedly fallen apart.
“I would love to have seen that fight take place a few years ago,” said Leonard.
Hearns, for his part, said Mayweather and Pacquiao owed it to boxing fans to fight each other.
“I think that when the public is demanding something like that, you have to address it,” he said.
