MANILA – Talk ‘N Text curbed Meralco’s uprising in the final two minutes to hammer out a 105-99 win in the PBA Governors’ Cup Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

Import Othyus Jeffers exploded for a total of 38 points to steer the Tropang Texters to their first victory since losing in their title series with San Mig Coffee in the recently concluded Commissioner’s Cup.

Ranidel de Ocampo churned out 22 points to go with his 6 rebounds, while Jayson Castro applied the finishing touches in the payoff period for a total of 21 points.

“It was a good way to start the third conference. I told the players that the best way to get back in the groove is just to come out and get a win today, to put the Finals behind us. And the players responded and played very well,” said Talk ‘N Text head coach Norman Black in the league’s official website.

Talk ‘N Text hardly shown any effect of their Finals loss to San Mig Coffee as it managed to turn back Meralco down the stretch.

Cliff Hodge instigated a 7-0 run to push the Bolts ahead, 97-92, with 2:23 remaining. But Castro and De Ocampo teamed up to unleash an 8-0 rally that enabled the Texters to take a 100-97 advantage 44.3 seconds left.

Castro and Larry Fonacier later pegged the final scores on the free throw line.

“They got a little bit close down the stretch, but Meralco is a good team and we respect them. They played us hard tonight, but we’re still able to come out with the victory,” Black said.

He added the win was important to establish their confidence after the beating they have received in the hands of the Coffee Mixers.

The Tropang Texters were riding high in the Commissioner’s Cup with a 13-0 record until they met their match in San Mig Coffee in their best-of-five finals. Talk ‘N Text ended up surrendering the series after they got beat by the Coffee Mixers in the series, 1-3.

“Some games, you have a problem getting your confidence back for the whole first quarter before you get back in playing the type of basketball you want to play,” Black explained.

“But in the end, we got the win. It’s all I’m concerned of at this point. We’ll just try to win as many games as possible to give us a chance to win it again at the end. That’s our goal right now.”

Hodge paced the Bolts with 24 points and 11 boards. Import Terrence Williams had 20 points, 14 boards, and eight assists.
