MANILA, Philippines – University of the East (UE) relied on their shooters to turn back University of Sto. Tomas (UST) and gain the third spot in Group B of the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup.
The Warriors outshot the Tigers, 85-68, on Saturday to improve their win-loss card to 4-2.
Ralf Olivarez tallied 17 points on a perfect 7-of-7 field goal shooting, while JR Sumido rifled four triples to finish with 16.
After lagging behind by 16 points at the half, 44-28, UST unleashed a run that cut the deficit to 59-56.
But Roy Sumang halted the run by scoring 10-straight points to give UE a 66-56 breathing room by the end of the third.
Sumang tallied a total of 15 points for the Warriors, while Aljon Mariano and Jeric Teng had 15 and 13 points, respectively, for UST.
The loss was the Tigers’ third in six games.
