MANILA, Philippines – Boxing great Erik Morales is eyeing a fight against fellow Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez in July.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer told Boxing Scene that “El Terrible” has indicated his willingness to face Marquez on July 14 at Cowboys Stadium in Texas.
“That’s the fight he wants. I said [to Morales] that I would be discussing it with Todd. I’m negotiating with Todd [duBoef of Top Rank]. We’re working on it," Schaefer said.
Morales is looking for an explosive fight against the Mexican counter-puncher, especially after losing his junior welterweight title fight against Danny Garcia last March.
Marquez earlier said he wanted to fight either Morales or unbeaten Filipino lightweight contender Mercito Gesta.
Schaefer hopes he could work out the deal with Top Rank.
"I’m basically waiting to hear back from Todd. We’ll see, so hopefully we’ll have some news tomorrow, possibly," Schaefer said.
Both Morales and Marquez have had trilogy fights against Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.
