DAVAO DEL NORTE, Philippines – A 14-year-old boy died after he got knocked out in a boxing match in Barangay Sawata, San Isidro in Davao del Norte.

The match was part of the barangay’s fiesta celebration.

Victim Johnrey Amar, 14, competed in a boxing match under the school boys category. During Round 2, he was knocked out by his opponent and never recovered.

He was rushed to the Kapalong District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

A crying Emalyn Amar, Johnrey’s mother, said her son idolized boxing champion Manny Pacquiao.

Based on hospital records, Amar died of a head injury.

Barangay Sawata Chairman Herminio Cirilo defended the boxing competition, saying it was held in accordance with rules and regulations.

"Legal ito dahil aprubado ng council at munisipyo. Ang purpose nito makadiskubre ng talento at maiwas sila sa bisyo," he said.

The Amar family does not want to press charges against the organizers, but asked that they be given assistance for burial expenses.

They also asked the organizers to make sure the incident never happens again. – From a report by Claire Cornelio, ABS-CBN News Davao
