MANILA, Philippines – For Jayson Castro, winning the Best Player of the Conference (BPC) award means nothing if his Talk ‘N Text team loses the PBA Commissioner’s Cup war to San Mig Coffee.
Castro aired his frustration after his team lost to the Mixers in Game 3 of their best-of-five series shortly after he was awarded the BPC trophy.
His Talk ‘N Text teammate, Richard Howell, also bagged the Best Import Award shortly before the start of Tuesday's game.
“Sayang ang lahat ng pinagpaguran namin kung hindi namin makukuha ang championship,” said Castro in the league’s official website.
Despite holding a 75-71 lead late in the fourth, the Tropang Texters suffered an end-game meltdown that allowed the Mixers to escape with a 77-75 win.
Castro himself suffered problems from beyond the arc, missing eight of his 11 attempts from there.
Now leading the series, 2-1, San Mig Coffee has the chance to close out the contest and win the title on Thursday.
“Kagaya ng lagi namin sinasabi sa team namin, hindi kami after individual award. Gusto namin championship para lahat kami fully rewarded,” he said.
Castro nabbed the BPC award after leading the statistical race and gaining the votes of the media, the players and the league’s commissioner’s office. He also won the BPC plum last year.
But he said he is willing to trade all these awards in exchange for a PBA title.
“I would be completely happy only if we end up celebrating a championship in this tournament,” added Castro.
