How much was every punch thrown by Manny Pacquiao against British champ Ricky Hatton?
Each blow Pacquiao landed on Hatton earned him P780,000, or $16,000 a punch.
Pacquiao stands to receive a guaranteed purse of $12 million for the “Battle of East and West,” and experts got the value of each punch by dividing the purse by the 72 blows the Filipino scored against Hatton during the brief, two-round encounter.
Pacquiao’s knockout punch in the second round, however, did not come by accident.
Footages taken by ABS-CBN prior to the fight showed the Filipino repeatedly practicing his deadly knockout blow with coach Freddie Roach.
Meanwhile, boxing analyst Ronnie Nathanielsz said Pacquiao will receive higher earnings once fight organizers finish computing and collecting the pay-per-view earnings for "Battle of East and West."
“Malaki pa talaga ang kikitain nila sa pay per view, kasi you have to remember, hindi lang Amerika nag pag-uusapan dito, pati na rin sa UK where Hatton is a god,” said Nathanielsz. “It will be huge. My guess is it will around $20 million in total.”
Aside from the monetary rewards, Pacquiao also earned a place among the greatest boxers of his era for his successful exploits in the boxing ring, especially against boxing champions like "Golden Boy" Oscar de la Hoya.
Pacquiao forced de la Hoya into retirement after defeating him last December 2008.
Nathanielsz said said that Pacquiao will also earn much more than P780,000 per punch if the much anticipated fight against former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. pushes through.
“I do not see the chance that neither Pacquiao nor Mayweather will not earn at least $20 millon dollars when they fight,” said Nathanielsz. -- With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News
