PH’s Barbosa prevails in Asian chess

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Oliver Barbosa posted another win in the ongoing Asian Continental Individual Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Barbosa defeated GM Lu Shanglei of China to improve his total output to 5.5 points.

He now shares 2nd to 4th places with GM Yu Yangyi of China and GM Salem A R Saleh of UAE.

Meanwhile, GMs Mark Paragua and John Paul Gomez lagged behind with losses to their opponents.

Paragua lost to Yu, while Gomez yielded to Saleh.

Paragua and Gomez have 4.5 points each, the same output of top rated Filipino GM Wesley So and 10 others.

So split the point with GM Abhijeet Gupta of India.

GMs Eugene Torre and Darwin Laylo won their respective assignment for 3.0 points while IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia halved the point with FM Nguyen Van Hai of Vietnam for 2.5 points.

GM Parimarjan Negi of India still on top with 6.0 points after beating GM Ding Liren of China.

The Asian Continental championship serves as a qualifier for the World Chess Cup. – By Marlon Bernardino
