Pinoys prevail in 6th round of Asian Chess

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino Grandmasters (GMs) Mark Paragua and Oliver Barbosa toppled their respective rivals to share with countryman GM John Paul Gomez joint second in the sixth round of the 11th Asian Continental Individual Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Paragua nipped GM Abhijeet Gupta of India, while Barbosa trounced GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia.

Gomez, meanwhile, split the point with GM Ding Liren of China.

Thus, Paragua, Barbosa, Gomez, Ding tallied 4.5 points each, the same output of GMs Yu Yangyi and Lu Shanglei and International Master (IM) Liu Qingnan of China and GM Salem AR Saleh of UAE.

GM Parimarjan Negi of India defeated former solo leader Yu to grab the leadership board with 5.0 points.

Country's top rated GM Wesley So is still in contention after beating GM Dao Thien Hai of Vietnam.

The Bacoor, Cavite ace So raised his total 4.0 points.
