MANILA, Philippines – Mexican boxing great Marco Antonio Barrera is among the many who clamor for the elusive mega-bout between his former rival Manny Pacquiao and current pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.
During the final presser for Pinoy Pride XXV, the three-division former world champion said Pacquiao has the fighting style that can foil Mayweather’s defense-oriented game.
“I want to see the fight, because Pacquiao has the style for Floyd,”Barrera told ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo.
Barrera is currently in Manila to support his boxer Moises Fuentes, who will battle WBO light flyweight champion Donnie Nietes at the main event of Pinoy Pride XXV this Saturday.
“The Baby-Faced Assassin” knows how it feels to fight the Filipino superstar as they already figured in two bouts.
They first fought in 2003, when Pacquiao who was then relatively unknown to US fight fans, pulled off a huge upset by humiliating Barrera with an 11th round stoppage. They met again in 2007, when the Filipino defeated him by points.
Boxing legends Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis earlier made a call for Pacquiao and Mayweather to finally fight.
Ali first congratulated “Money Mayweather” for his victory against Marcos Maidana before asking the controversial fighter to rumble with the Filipino.
Lewis, for his part, said the big fight worth watching is “The Grand Finale” between the fighting congressman and Mayweather.
“Honestly the only fight I want to see for Mayweather is Pacquiao! #TheGrandFinale,” he said on his Twitter account".
