MANILA, Philippines – There are now two titles at stake in Donnie Nietes rematch against Moises Fuentes this coming Saturday.
Aside from staking his WBO light flyweight crown against the Mexican, Nietes will also get the chance to win the RING junior flyweight lineal title at the main event of Pinoy Pride XXV.
According to Dong Secuya’s PhilBoxing report, Nietes could follow the footsteps of current Filipino boxers who have already become lineal champions.
“With this development, Nietes attempts to become the fourth Filipino boxer to win a lineal title in the present crop of Filipino pugilists following the footsteps of Manny Pacquiao (Featherweight, Nov. 15, 2003; Super Featherweight, March 15, 2008; and Junior Welterweight, May 2, 2009), Nonito Donaire Jr (Junior Featherweight, Oct. 13, 2012) and Sonny Boy Jaro (Flyweight, March 2, 2012),” Secuya wrote.
He also reported that other Filipino boxers who became lineal champions include: Francisco Guilledo (Pancho Villa), Dado Marino, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde, Ben Villaflor, Erbito Salavarria and Frank Cedeno.
The lineal champion is described as "the man who beat the man" or the best champion in the division.
Nietes is currently ranked as RING Magazine's top contender in the junior flyweight division, while Fuentes is ranked No. 3.
