MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines Under-18 team has clinched a spot in the 23rd FIBA Asia U-18 Championship after crushing Malaysia, 93-76, in the ongoing Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) U18 tournament Tuesday evening.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Philippines, led by Ranbill Tongoc’s 12 points and Jose Go’s 11 in the game at the Tawau Community Hall in Malaysia.
The Filipinos trailed 27-28 in the 4:11 mark of the second period but ended the half with an 18-2 run that made it 45-30 at halftime.
Malaysia threatened again in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to eight points, 60-68, entering the final frame, but the Philippines held firm in the fourth period to wrap up the win.
The Philippines are thus the first SEABA team to seal a berth in the FIBA Asia U-18 Championship in August in Doha.
Three players scored in double digits for Malaysia, who shot only 26% from the field. The Jamike Jarin-coached Philippine team converted 43% of their field goal attempts.
