Three players share lead in nat'l chess championships

 MANILA, Philippines – Former University of Manila standout Robert Cacho agreed to a draw with Piokit Ibanez in their fifth-round match to stay on top of the 2013 National Chess Championships at the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) canteen in Vito Cruz, Manila.

Cacho is sharing the tournament lead with Charles Daniel Abuzo and Ibanez, as all three players compiled 4.5 points after five rounds of action.

In the fourth round, Cacho beat Efren Arguelles, while Ibanez beat Franz Barretto and Abuzo routed Renato Cruz Jr.

In the women’s division, Crissa Canada scored back-to-back wins to remain on top with 4.5 points in five outings. She beat Ynna Sophia Canape in the fourth and Judith Pineda in the fifth round.

Mariel Batulan and Luzelle Bermundo share the second spot with 4.0 points each.

The tournament is organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supported by the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee. NCFP executive director and Grand Master Jayson Gonzales serves as tournament director. -- By Marlon Bernardino.
