MANILA, Philippines – National team coach Chot Reyes commended the members of the Gilas Pilipinas cadet pool who stepped up and performed well in the team’s game against the visiting Shanghai Sharks Monday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Garvo Lanete, RR Garcia and Greg Slaughter were all instrumental in powering Gilas to an 80-72 win over the Sharks, a team owned by former NBA All-Star Yao Ming.
“Garvo was shooting, RR was shooting, Greg was holding his own,” Reyes told Spin.ph. “Wala akong masabi sa mga ‘yun.”
“For them to put themselves out there with three days practice, to play against a team like that, that’s a tremendous testament,” he added.
Lanete scored 10 points, while Garcia fired eight, including two three-pointers that allowed Gilas to build a 40-25 lead in the second quarter.
Reyes was also happy to see the younger players mesh well with the pro players, considering the short preparation time afforded to the team.
“The program was in full display tonight for the team of pros of Gilas to be able to play with the cadets almost seamlessly,” he said. “I think this is a testament to the direction the program is taking.”
The Philippines-China Friendship Game is the second game that Gilas played in three days. Last May 5, they battled the PBA All-Stars to a 124-124 draw in the PBA All-Star Game in Digos, Davao del Sur.
