MANILA – Team Philippines kicked off their 2014 Southeast Asia Basketball Association (SEABA) Under-18 campaign with an overwhelming 98-35 victory over Indonesia Monday evening at the Tawau Community Hall in Malaysia.
Jollo Go led all scorers with 18 points off the bench, making six of his 10 field goal attempts including five three-pointers. Ranbill Tongco was the only other Filipino in double digits with 13 points.
Thirdy Ravena had 9 points and 11 rebounds, as every Filipino player scored at least four markers in a balanced team performance.
Both teams actually got off to a slow start, and it was Indonesia who got on board first when Rivaldo Pangesthio scored at the 9:33 mark of the first frame.
A free throw by Ravena at the 7:49 mark finally broke the ice for the Philippines, and they took the lead on Dawn Ochea shot just a few possessions later.
The Filipinos went on to post a 23-8 lead at the end of the opening frame and were never really threatened, as they shot 43% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.
They also dominated the boards, 57 to 33, and held Indonesia to only 25% shooting from the field.
Vincent Kosasih was the lone Indonesian player in double-digits, with 10 points.
The Jamike Jarin-coached national team will gun for a second win Tuesday against Malaysia.
The top two teams from the competition will represent SEABA in the 23rd FIBA Asia U-18 Championship in August in Doha, Qatar.
