MANILA, Philippines – Visayas leg winner Joel Pimentel, Jr. outwitted FIDE Master (FM) Haridas Pascua in the 7th round to grab a share of the lead in the junior men’s division of the 2012 National Age Group and National Juniors Chess Championships in Tanauan, Batangas.

The pride of Bacolod improved his total to 6.0 points on 5 wins and 2 draws, the same output of defending champion National Master (NM) Mari Joseph Turqueza of Quezon City.

Turqueza also scalped Cavite’s Vince Angelo Medina in the 7th.

Pascua, who absorbed his first loss after 5 straight wins, can join the leaders by winning his 7th game. He had a bye in the sixth round.

The Pangasinan bet actually has the edge in the tiebreak if a triple tie ensues with more wins on his account.

In the junior girls division, Woman National Master (WNM) Jedara Docena of Bohol and Jodilyn Fronda of Manila continued to dominate the field.

Docena toppled Deanne Aubrey Surposa of General Santos, while Fronda beat Carol Anne Chua of Misamis Oriental to maintain their perfect records after 5 games.
