'Ahas' eyes 112-lb division after 3 defenses

MANILA, Philippines – World junior flyweight champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes seeks to climb the 112-weight class after three successful title defenses.

“Meron pa kong planong umakyat ng division. Siguro after 2 to 3 defenses, aakyat ako ulit,” Nietes, WBO’s junior flyweight king, told ABS-CBNnews.com.

The 30-year-old Nietes wants to follow the path taken by his boxing hero, Manny Pacquiao, who won 8 world titles in 8 weight classes.

Aside from holding the WBO junior flyweight strap, Nietes used to own the WBO minimumweight title.

“Talagang nangangarap po ako na magawa ang nagawa ni Pacquiao,” said the soft-spoken Ilonggo.

But first, Nietes will have to face Felipe Salguero on June 2 at the Resorts World Hotel in Pasay City.

Salguero, a native of Toluca, Mexico, is a top contender for the title.

“Hindi ko sinasabing mana-knockout ko s'ya pero sa tingin ko magandang laban ito dahil magaling s’ya,” said Nietes.
