MANILA, Philippines -- Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire said he sees no trouble in making the featherweight limit for his WBA title fight against South Africa’s Simpiwe Vetyeka.
The Flash is currently holding his camp at the famed ALA Gym in Cebu and is feeling the country’s summer heat and humidity.
“It's very, very hot, pero OK sa ‘kin to,” the three-division former world champion told ABS-CBN’s Dyan Castillejo.
With the heat, he said it will be easy for him to shed excess weight and meet the 126-pound featherweight limit.
Donaire added that the heat will also help him build his stamina, which could come in handy against Vetyeka.
“Nakikita ko na maganda sa akin 'to for endurance,” he said.
His father, Nonito Sr., who serves as his chief trainer for the fight, said his son’s fitness will be important versus Vetyeka. He is training his son to use more head movements to make him a difficult target for the South African.
“[He’ll use] speed, more on combinations,” said Nonito Sr. “Pag tumatakbo ang kalaban, just move forward, moving his head while throwing his punches.”
Donaire will be challenging Vetyeka for the WBA featherweight title on May 31 at the Cotai Arena in Macau.
