MANILA, Philippines – Ginebra star Mark Caguioa pulled no punches as he lambasted his teammates after the Gin Kings were eliminated in the PBA Commissioners Cup quarter-finals by the top-seeded Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters Tuesday night.
Ginebra’s Commissioners Cup campaign ended on a brutal note as they were routed by TNT, 97-84, allowing the Texters to advance to the semi-finals. Caguioa scored 19 points in a losing effort.
Early Wednesday morning, Caguioa hit out at his teammates for their "soft and lazy" play, claiming that not even a legendary NBA coach could have brought such a team to the PBA semi-finals.
“Dati rati, kinakatakutan itong team na ito at iniilagan, pero ngayon lahat ng team gusto kami kalaban kasi mga tamad and sobrang lalambot,” Caguioa said on Twitter.
He accused his teammates of not knowing the history of the Ginebra team and not embodying the squad’s famous "never say die" spirit.
“Parang ito ‘yung mga player ngayon na parang hindi alam ang history ng Ginebra. I don’t think they know kasi parang walang mga pake,” he said.
“Kilala ba nila si Coach Sonny (Jaworski)? Noli Locsin? Pido (Jarencio)? Bal David? Rudy Distrito? Itong mga player na ito, makikipag-palitan talaga ng mukha,” said Caguioa, naming several Ginebra legends.
“Wala ng ganitong players ngayon,” Caguioa said. “Kung meron man, hindi pinapalaro dahil nga parang nagpo-promote lang kami ng mga players ngayon.”
“Let me tell you guys, kahit si Phil Jackson mag-coach sa ganitong team, hindi pa rin papasok sa semis,” he added.
“Walang mga puso mag laro, WALA WALA WALA!”
Ginebra, for all its talent, could only win three of their nine assignments in the elimination round and limped into the quarter-finals.
They were summarily dispatched by the unbeaten Texters, as Ginebra had no answer for import Richard Howell.
