MANILA, Philippines – The San Miguel Beermen are looking to become the first team to qualify to the PBA Commissioners Cup semi-finals when they take on the Air21 Express Tuesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Beermen, who wound up in second place after the eliminations with a 7-2 record, have a twice-to-beat advantage against the seventh-seeded Express.

But they figure to have their hands full with Air21, who paraded high-scoring import Wesley Witherspoon aside from locals Asi Taulava, Joseph Yeo and Mac Cardona.

In their game in the eliminations, San Miguel had to overhaul an 18-point deficit against Air21 to win, 93-85.

“We really struggled shooting,” San Miguel coaching consultant Todd Purves told “I thought we had some great looks early on in the game, and I think we missed shots that we normally make.”

“Our guys just hung in there until our shots came,” he added.

But Purves warned that they cannot have another poor shooting night against the Express in the quarter-finals.

“You can’t let a poor shooting night affect the other things you do in the game. Certainly, we have to play at another level if we want to win playoff games,” he said.

Game time is at 5:45 p.m.
